Unlock Literacy

Building confident, capable learners through the power of literacy.

Unlock Literacy

Unlock Literacy is a literacy-focused program designed to strengthen children’s reading skills while supporting confidence, curiosity, and lifelong learning. The program complements our existing educational initiatives by creating intentional opportunities for children to engage with books, storytelling, and guided learning experiences in meaningful ways.

Through this program, we work with educators, schools, and communities to provide:

Age-appropriate and culturally relevant reading materials

Literacy-enriched learning spaces

Guided reading and storytelling sessions

Support for educators to integrate reading into everyday learning

Why Unlock Literacy

Many children have limited access to books and structured reading support. Unlock Literacy helps bridge this gap by ensuring children are exposed to consistent, supportive, and engaging literacy experiences that strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and a love for reading.

80%

Of primary-age children in Ghana do not achieve minimum reading proficiency by age 10 (UNICEF).

20%

Of children in grades 2 and 3 can read with comprehension at the national level.

Root Causes We Address:

  • Lack of books and play-based materials

  • No community libraries or learning places

  • Lack of supervision and amenities at home

Community Engagement

Unlock Literacy recognizes that reading is more than a skill—it is a gateway to academic success, self-expression, and future opportunity. Our program aims to ensure children in the early grades of primary school learn to read so they can read to learn.

Extending Literacy Beyond the Classroom

Through school-approved after-school reading sessions, GhaLLA staff mentor and support students to strengthen their reading skills and confidence. The programme also provides books for teachers and learners, while engaging parents to encourage reading at home and sustain learning beyond the classroom.
